Small KWin update
Kind of a quiet week the past week in KWin—a few bug fixes, some backend work and a couple of small (But extremely useful) features thrown in as a bonus.
- “Active mouse screen” setting renamed to “Active screen follows mouse”.
- Some new common settings in the main desktop effects panel, now it’s easier to select which effects are used for window switching (Alt+Tab) and desktop switching without causing any conflicts as well as configuring the animation speed of all effects at once.
- When using the present windows effect in window switching mode the mouse can now be used to switch to a window immediately.
- Restoring a maximized window that was dragged across multiple screens restores it to the screen that it is on instead of where it was maximized.
- Prettied up the desktop cube/cylinder/sphere admin panels a little.
- Added compositing self-test to allow compositing to be enabled by default on systems that can support it (Buggy, needs testing)
- Undocking utility windows no longer applies the fade-in/scale-in effect to them when the mouse button is released.
- It’s now possible to invert just a single window with the invert effect.
P.S. Git absolutely rocks. Maintaining and keeping an organized overview of all branches and patches has never been easier. No more Subversion for me (With the exception of git-svn for KDE of course).

Great work. The new way to change this is so much more logical. :-)

what about the ability to drag a window to another desktop when you reach the edge of the screen (while dragging the window), similar to compiz (IIRC someone on the dot talked about it some time ago, but since then i didnt hear anything).
rock on guys, hopefully kwin will reach the stability of compiz by 4.2

That’s been available in KWin for a long time already. The option is called “Active desktop borders” and can be found on the advanced tab of the window behavior system settings panel.

Did you allow, or are there any plans to allow, people to map actions to keyboard/mouse button combinations instead of just keyboard button combinations?

Great to see kWin getting better and better… Will the tiling window managing feature make it for 4.2 ?

I don’t think I’ll have the time to get it in before 4.2 considering the current state of my compositing TODO. There is a slight chance though that 4.2 might get some basic tiling functionality instead of the full thing, we’ll have to wait and see what happens.

Hi,
Kwin is make huge progress towards maturity. Congrats!
I just noticed that rotating my mouse wheel when pointing the desktop changes desktop. Cool.
One thing I still miss from Compiz is using the mouse wheel (i.e. middle button) click as a shortcut to activate the cube. Right now it looks like I can only use a key on the keyboard or pointing in a corner of the screen.
Thanks,
